Apple And Samsung Have Nothing To Worry About After Today’s Nokia And Motorola Events
Nokia’s new Lumia 920 and 820 look nice, as the previous ones did, but that’s not enough.
Nokia and Microsoft need to give consumers and/or operators some really compelling reasons to gamble with Windows phones, and they still haven’t. I’ve met a few people who really love their Windows phones, but it’s such a small audience that it doesn’t matter. Microsoft and Nokia need huge pickup on these devices right now or they will fall even further behind.
I still don’t see anything to get excited about, either from a consumer angle (“why should I buy this instead of an iPhone?”) or a carrier angle (“why should we buy millions of these and push them hard instead of the Android phones we have more control over?”).
Motorola’s new Android RAZR things (they seriously call one “Maxx”) still look like the same uninspired contraptions that were shipping before.
It’s going to take some time, I understand, before Google can do what it wants to Motorola. So I’m going to give them another mulligan here.
But these just don’t do anything for me. Google needs to take Motorola beyond “boring Android phone maker number three” or it’s never going to make it work.
Bottom line: iPhone will still be the phone to beat this Christmas. Samsung still gets my bet, as far as Android goes. And Windows Phone is still looking sad.
