RIM’s plunge in profitability is just insane
Horace Dediu gives RIM the Asymco treatment and, whoa, check out the last chart on operating margins.
One lesson here, which we’re learning over and over, is just how quickly things can change in the mobile industry. When your customers are on two-year subscription cycles and your products are supposed to improve dramatically every year (or at least Apple’s do), it’s easy to lose your footing really quickly.
As Dediu notes, “historically no company has survived dipping into the grey zone” of unprofitability. It’s not looking good for RIM’s future as an independent company.
