Twitter buys Bagcheck: The start of a Twitter commerce play?
Bagcheck is a site I wish I’d come up with in college when I was selling camping gear: A place where people curate and share all the gear they own and use, for backpacking, cooking, sports, tech stuff, whatever. It’s an interesting idea at the intersection of social networking and commerce, and there are very obvious opportunities to make money off a site like that.
Anyway, Twitter recently acquired the site, mostly, it seems, to bring on founder Sam Pullara. Bagcheck will continue to run for now, but who knows what’s going to happen to it going forward.
I suspect that this could have something to do with Twitter’s ambitions to play more in commerce. So much commerce goes through Twitter — people looking for advice and deals, locating food trucks, searching for product reviews, etc. — and it makes sense for Twitter to try and get involved in that process somehow.
Judging by Twitter CEO Dick Costolo’s comments at a recent conference — published here by Fortune’s Dan Primack — it sounds like that’s already in the works. My hunch is that Pullara could play a role.
Also: The only thing that matters about Twitter’s ad product is that it exists
