Today’s downtime
SplatF was down for more than 12 hours today, thanks to a massive, undisclosed problem with Dreamhost, my host. This sort of outage is unprecedented in my many years working with Dreamhost. But because of its duration — and Dreamhost’s other problems recently — I’m going to consider moving. I apologize for the downtime, and, as always, appreciate your time and attention.
Update: Dreamhost’s newish CEO Simon Anderson (who had, to his credit, been pretty responsive via Twitter yesterday) posts this explanation for the outage. Basically, an OS auto-update broke a bunch of stuff, so they’re going to switch to manual updates. This isn’t as bad as I’d feared — I’m happy that it wasn’t another intrusion with possibly compromised security/data — but it’s still a good idea to think about my longer-term hosting plans. Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far.
